So a couple of days ago I was hanging out with some friends at one of our favourite hang outs, Buena Vista, talking about nothing and everything as always. They say your teenage years are the most confusing years of your life but boy are they wrong. Try being in your twenties and you have finished studying a degree that you are very sure you are not passionate about, you have landed a job that strips you of every joy there is and when Sunday night comes your stomach hurts at the thought of yet another week at that job. They say you are a young adult and so you should know what you are doing and where you are headed but all you feel is uncertainty, insecurity and you wish you had the chance to just do more of what you love and less of what you are stuck with.
We decided to just indulge each other and share our goals and dreams and I noted that it is generally very difficult for people to share their dreams and passions. This is because 1). people are afraid that the idea might not sound good/cool enough, 2). some people are afraid to dream because they believe their background is not the kinda background where dreams come true, they don't believe they are worthy enough to have goals and dreams, 3). people do not fully understand their own dreams and also because 4).people don't have an idea where to start. Isn't that always the million dollar question; how do I get to do what I love? And when you find the answer to that ple-e-ease let a girl know because I have been battling with that for some time now...lol. But cheer up it is not all doom.
Here are some things I have come to realise:
1). It is important to dream, and dream big. Yes yes it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and like you on top of the world until someone pinches you and you realise you are at work and are daydreaming again..lol. No seriously, it is important to dream. Each and every single person was called to do something. There is something that you are good at, there is something that you can do; and more often than not it is actually something that comes naturally to you. So next time when you are cracking your head trying to think what your purpose is, take a moment and look at some of those things that you are naturally good at you could be surprised at what you find.
2). It is important that you start speaking of your dreams. Now hold up!, you don't have to tell the whole world about it, share it with those who are close to you, those who are there for you and can encourage you because;
3). Speaking about your dream pushes you to want to do something about it. There is something about saying it out loud; it’s the start of building that confidence that you can do it. Letting others know is also good in that they can help look out for opportunities for you because you do know that everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody else who can get you connected right?
4). Have a picture of what you ultimately want to see. Ask yourself if this world were mine what would I want this to look like. This helps in that once you have a big picture you can start to find small ways to accomplish smaller targets that will eventually get you to the big dream. Always have the bigger picture in your head.
5). Write it down. I have come to realise that writing things down is so powerful. It helps put down on paper that which you are thinking of doing, it helps you break it down and understand it. You can always refer to it at a later stage just to remind yourself of what you intend to do and besides most people who have accomplished their goals and dreams say they wrote their dreams down so just..you know...follow suit.
6). Pray. Pray about it. In Joshua 1 God says that every place where you set your foot I will give it to you but be strong and courageous; be very strong and courageous. Ask God to guide you and direct you footsteps. Making a dream into a reality is not an easy task at most times, you have to be prepared to work hard because anything that is of substance comes from hard work. It will be challenging, there will be all sorts of trials but if you persevere, work hard, stay disciplined, courageous, strong and in keeping with God's will for your life, your dreams will come to pass.
